DRAG KING WORKSHOPS
Drag king: an entertainer who intentionally assumes a theatrical guise of maleness in, and for, performance
Captivated by drag kings? Ever wanted to try drag yourself? Already a king, but you want to expand your craft? Then these are the workshops for you! Since 2013 Goldie has taught these workshops either in 3 consecutive parts or as day-long intensives. These workshops are open to people of all gender presentations and identities, and all levels of performance experience (including the lack thereof).
What you'll learn:
Level 1
-drag king history and culture
-important resources for drag kings
-basic costuming, styling, makeup, facial hair, packing, binding
-how to concoct a dynamite persona
Level 2
-cutting-edge drag techniques
-classic tricks of the trade
-exercises to free up your creativity
-how to perform a fierce number
-fine points of performance technique
We start this class with an intro, a demo, exercises and playing dress-up, and finish it off with structured, individual work towards creating numbers. No worries, no pressure. This class is about process versus results.
Level 3
Participants get into costume, warm-up, perform numbers in front of the group and receive constructive, structured feedback from the instructor and other participants. Work at all stages of development is welcome.
The Rest is Drag: Improvisational Movement + Costumes
Students delve into improvisational movement informed by costumes provided by the instructor. Drawing from skills accumulated over 10 years as a professional improviser, trained mover and drag artist, Goldie leads the class through exercises to jumpstart inspiration. No previous dance training required.
